NRWA Summer Naturalist Adventure Series for Grades 5 and Up
Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sibley Hall at the Groton Public Library, 99 Main Street in Groton, MA
This summer the NRWA is offering a series of free programs for young naturalists, grades 5 and up, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays, in collaboration with the Groton Public Library. We’ll gather at the library, then head outside to explore nearby outdoor spaces. These programs combine wildlife and nature exploration with sketching activities to deepen observation skills while capturing the finer details of nature. Materials will be provided. NRWA naturalists will lead the following programs:
July 7: Birdways Explore the amazing life of birds with NRWA naturalists! Discover how feathers work, compare beaks, feet, and nests, and go on an adventurous bird walk using binoculars and field guides to improve your identification skills. Learn to identify using size, color, silhouette, flight patterns, behavior, location, bird calls, and songs. Register with library.
August 4: Animal Adaptations Discover the secrets of survival with our local wildlife! Using skins, skulls, animal mounts, and other hands-on materials look closely at our wildest animals including mink, otter, beaver, fisher, coyote, and fox to better understand their successful adaptations for survival. Activities include close observation with Magiscopes & sketching materials, wildlife bingo game sheet, and making tracks. Register with library.
August 11: Aquatic Insect Investigations Meet Nashua River's underwater insects and learn how these incredible creatures compare with the best of science fiction characters! Learn about their life cycles and get up close and personal with these benthic macro-invertebrates. Take time to identify and sketch your favorites. There is nothing boring about these river residents! Register with library.
Attend one, two, or all three! Space is limited; registration through the library is required for each program. FREE
NRWA Series on Climate Impact in the Nashua River Watershed
Each of the presentations in the Nashua River Watershed Association's five-part series on "Climate Impact in the Nashua River Watershed: What is Happening and Actions We Can Take " was recorded and all are available for viewing on NRWA's YouTube channel. This includes the most recent talk by David Vallee from NWS/NOAA on the topic of "Torrential Rains from Slow Moving Tropical Systems: Is This Part of the New Normal?" in which David talked about the current state of precipitation, temperature, and flood frequency in our region, and how the behavior of our tropical systems has changed leading to more frequent events like Florence, Henri, and Ida. He also showcased new services NWS is working on: real-time forecast flood inundation services. View David Vallee presentation. FREE
